Current Challenges Facing Muslim Youth

Impact of Social Media on our Lives

There’s no doubt that Social Media have transformed our lives positively, but more so negatively. Family relationships are impacted hard. People talk to each other less and dependence on smartphones and other gadgets is beyond imagination. We definitely need to reclaim control of our lives before our social fabric will irreversibly change.

Challenges As Expressed by the Youth Themselves

Quite often we talk about Youth challenges from our own perspective and we end up missing the target. Today we look at those perspectives by listening to the Youth themselves.

Educating the Public about Islam

Education is the tool to combat Islamophobia. People who are misinformed become Islamophobes out of fear, not necessarily out of hate. We need to educate ourselves first before we go out to the world and share our Islam with the public.

Is it possible to separate Faith from Culture?

Islam and culture are separate yet interactive. The rule to judge one’s actions is that they need to be Islamically acceptable and culturally comfortable.

  • "My heart is at ease knowing that what was meant for me will never miss me and that what misses me was never meant for me.”

Activities and Services

The scope of my Da'wa

  • Fundraising is the main source of income for most Muslim communities trying to establish themselves in the west. Alhamdulillah over the last 35 years, I was privileged to help hundreds of communities raise necessary funds to build masajid, schools, and to support charities, both locally like food-banks and internationally to alleviate pain and suffering in many devastated areas of the world.

  • Lectures on Islamic topics are major events that attract Muslims who seek to advance their Knowledge. Living in the west, many Muslims may not have access to formal Islamic education. Lectures make a huge difference. Allah S.W. Has been generous in allowing me to speak with passion and focus. Over the last 40 years I have lectured on topics spanning a wide spectrum including Quranic sciences, Parenting, Seerah, Islamic guidance, Islamic history, current issues, and Hadeeth. Some of my lectures are in series and have been shown on television in many counties. Examples include: A Matter of Life and Death, Save a Family, and Know This Man: Life of Prophet Muhammad.

  • Khutbahs need a special focus as far as our Western environment is concerned. I believe that the weekly Khutbah should reflect current realities and analyze them from an Islamic perspective. Dwelling in the past without casting its lessons on the present and future is counter productive. Hundreds of my Jumu’ah Khutbabs may be accessed on my Youtube channel.

  • Hajj and Umrah are the acts of worship that my heart is attached to. Alhamdulillah, I was privileged to help guide thousands of Hujjaj and Umrah performers. I do not believe that Hajj and Umrah should be performed as mere rituals. I always try to bring the historical perspective within those rituals. Hajj and Umrah should be life changing experiences.

  • Interfaith Dialogue has a very special place in my Da’wa. I have spoken at many places of worship and has assumed the role of chaplain at Western University in London, Ontario and with London Police. My chaplaincy is always delivered from a multi-faith perspective. Interfaith dialogue is especially important nowadays to help eliminate xenophobia and Islamophobia.

  • Leadership development is extremely important to help pass on the banner from one generation to another. Without strong and solid leadership capable to face challenges in present day life, Muslim communities may not be able to survive. Leadership development workshops are conducted within many communities and new leaders continue to appear.

  • I used to be a camp director for 11 years in the 80’s and 90’s. Summer camps are extremely valuable for Islamic identity development. I continue to organize camps and/or visit them as a motivational speaker. I have a special rapport with children of all ages. I love telling them stories and planning Islamic games as well as sing Islamic Nasheeds.

  • Marriage is the institution wherein a strong Muslim community is developed. I help conduct marriage workshops and have a series in this field called: “Save a Family”. I am a licensed marriage officer in the Province of Ontario and have officiated Alhamdulillah hundreds of marriages.

  • Counselling of families and couples is an essential element for the well being of Muslims in the West. Trying to consolidate Islamic values with western realities is not an easy task. We need to train social workers in this field. I have worked with such professionals to help explain the Islamic perspective of family matters.
